About
If you are a hunter, you know that there is absolutely nothing like a good hunting story. Often told surrounding a fire, in the woods, with good friends and family or with drink in hand. Reliving a hunt through the telling of its story has long been tradition and often is one of the best parts of the hunt.
I am a hunter through and through, and it is on my mind year round. I grew up going to our family hunting camp in Northwestern Pennsylvania. This is where my love for hunting sparked and took off like wildfire. The PA hunting camp tradition is one that is rivaled almost nowhere.
Each and every year, as Thanksgiving Day comes to a close, hunters flock to their camps in anticipation of the first day of deer season. Like ours, these camps were often founded by ancestors, and family bloodlines create camp traditions that are passed on from generation to generation.
The founders of our camp, my grandparents, great aunt and uncle, as well as aunts, uncles and cousins created a “log,” where they wrote stories about what took place at camp during their trips so they could be re-told years later.
Over the years I began reading and re-reading the log, mainly to read about all of the hunting stories told in it. We also had a stash of old volumes of the PA Game News – a small monthly magazine full of hunting stories from the Keystone State – that I loved to read.
Allegheny Antler was created as a platform to share our hunting stories from my family’s Northwestern PA camp as well as hunting excursions elsewhere and yet to come. Looking back at my childhood and early adulthood, my most fond memories come from camp, hunting and being in the woods.
I created Allegheny Antler to share our stories in hopes that others may relate and share their own traditions. I encourage you to reach out, to share your stories and to pass this great tradition on for generations to come.
